Knight of the Year 2016

Joe Scrudato

On August 16th The South Plainfield Knights of Columbus Council #6203 handed out their End of Year Awards. During the meeting Past Grand Knight Tom Pollock presented the 2016 South Plainfield Knights of Columbus Knight of the Year Award to Joe Scrudato.

Joe received this award for his many dedicated years to the South Plainfield Knights of Columbus and for his support he gives back to South Plainfield with great emphasis on the Youth, Community, Family and Church activities. Joe has been an Knights Officer for many years and was Grand Knight for 4 years over 2 terms and Faithful Navigator of the 4th degree the last 2 years.

Joe has been Chairman of there Special Citizens Drive since 2003. Every year over 150 Knights members collect money in front of local businesses to support mentally handicap citizens. Since 2003 the Knights have collected over $150,000 and every cent gets donated back to organizations that support a better life for mentally handicap citizens like: The Keystone Community, Midland School and Camp Sun and Fun. Joe's dedication to this cause is a great tribute to the type of person he is and what he gives back to those less fortunate.

Another great event Joe is very proud of is the Keystone Community Christmas Party he chairs with fellow Knight Bill Thomas. For many years Joe and Bill along with many Knights members and their family members give the Keystone residents a great Christmas party to remember with a Special Visit from their very own Santa's (Ed Kubala and now Max Waldrop). Bill and his wife Kathy donate all the presents and Joe donates all of the food for this very special event.

As well Joe started the Knights Scholarship Program in his first term as Grand Knight, Joe wanted to give something back to its members and families who have given so much of their time in making the South Plainfield Council on of the Best Knights Councils in New Jersey. Since the Scholarship program was started many members children and grandchildren have continued their education at Catholic High Schools and College's with the generous donations from this fund.

Other programs Joe supports through the Knights are the annual Mum's Sale, Sacred Heart Lenten Fish Dinners, the OLC Feast of Saint Anthony Carnival, Don't Cook Friday Spaghetti Dinners, Veterans Lunches as well as many other fundraisers.

Joe is also currently is the Commissioner of the South Plainfield Junior Baseball Club. Joe has also been Manager or Coach for Ponytail Softball, Rec Basketball and supports the High School Booster Club as a Trustee. Joe also is on the Mayors Wellness Committee and was a member of the Labor Day Parade Committee for many years. One of Joe’s most proudest moments was that he was a Councilman for the South Plainfield Boro for 3 years and to this day still supports the Mayor and Council when asked, which he truly appreciates.

When you see Joe around South Plainfield, congratulate him on this very worthy honor.
